CHILLICOTHE, Ill. – Chillicothe says it has reached a “tipping point” with its water rates.
In a letter posted on Chillicothe’s website from the city council, the city will increase the rates this summer.
The council cites a state law that requires the water department to stand alone financially, along with increasing costs and revenues staying the same. The letter also says the city was recently denied a grant opportunity because water rates were too low.
The letter says those increasing costs include labor, equipment, and energy. The city is also needing to replace aging infrastructure.
The city plans to eliminate its current tier system for calculating water bills, and will move to a flat rate for each cubic foot of water used.
The rate itself has yet to be determined.
